14 nov Strijdbare Sophie Tucker

Met de carrière van Sophie Tucker ging het in den beginne niet al te best. De meeste theaterbazen dachten dat de comédienne (1886-1966) geen aantrekkingskracht zou hebben op het podium. Reden? Ze was in hun ogen veel te dik. Daar trok Tucker zich niets van aan, en wat bleek? Het publiek was dol op haar. Haar opvattingen over uiterlijk en seks waren absoluut vrijmoedig. Neem alleen al deze strofe in het lied Nobody loves a fat girl, but oh how a fat girl can love:

Nobody seems to want me
I’m just a truck upon the highway of love
I’m all alone inside of my form
When ev’ry ounce of me is dyin’ to keep somebody warm

In 1929 trok ze flink van leer tegen de toen geldende schoonheidsopvattingen en dieetregels met het liedje I don’t want to get thin. Ted Shapiro begeleidt haar op de piano.
